MATCH REPORT

VWFC 2 - 1 Wembley

9th October 2021

CCPL Premier North

VW achieved back to back league wins, thanks to a late winner in a pulsating match at Stag Meadow.

The home side started the brighter, with Josh Dillon going close with a close range header and another shot.

However after the first quarter, the visitors gained the upper hand, as VW were hampered by an injury to Captain Ryan Blake, and had to move influential midfielder Casey Bocarro to emergency left back to deputise, which he did terrifically well.

We failed to clear our line on 25 minutes, and from a scuffed shot that was going wide, the ball was deflected into our net by the unfortunate Eric Matufa at the back post.

The visitors then enjoyed a period of domination and could have extended the lead, but our defence (in particular our CB pairing of Adam Mills and Guy Hollis) held firm, ably supported by Matt in goal.

After the break we had to lift our work rate, attitude and territory, in an attempt to get back into the game, and thankfully we did exactly that.

Some mew impetus off the bench also helped, and VW were much the better side after the break, pressing high and forcing errors, as the visitors tired.

Our equaliser came from one of our many corners, when on 59 minutes, Joel Drew calmly back heeled the ball into the corner of the net from close range.

With clear cut chances at a premium, it was VW who went looking for the win, although Wembley were a real threat on the counter.

Time running out, and into the final 5 minutes, Alfie Pendlebury headed the ball on, which was hunted down by the predatory Adam McNamara, to chip their approaching keeper, and give the home side, what had seemed an unlikely victory.

We wish Wembley the best of luck for the season ahead.
