MATCH REPORT

VWFC 4 - 2 Abbey Rangers

8th January 2022
Combined Counties Premier North

VW started the New Year with an excellent and thoroughly deserved win, and rare double, over near neighbours Abbey Rangers at a very wet and windy Stag Meadow.

In our opinion, the home side were the better in each half, albeit the match was somehow goalless at half time, VW missing a number of great chances.

Some good pressure saw the excellent Turnell Sinclair going close on four occasions, Adam McNamara, Casey Bocarro and Joe Morrison all seeing goal bound efforts cleared or blocked on the line.

At the other end, the new back four of Joe, Adam Mills, Elijah Oladunjoye and Adam Mills defended superbly, limiting AR to a few chances, plus one great save from Luke in goal.

The second half proved to be a goal fest, with VW getting things moving, when Turnell slotted home from close range on 55 minutes, following a flick on from one of many set pieces.

Soon after, on 63 minutes, we scored our second, when Turnell turned provider, to cross from wide out, which was volleyed home superbly by Saaim Shabeer for his first VW senior goal.

Back came AR, and on 68 minutes, when VW failed to clear a long ball, their striker rifled in to bring on the nervous final quarter.

Luke made a terrific save with his feet to deny an AR attack minutes later, then, Turnell got our third, and his second, on 74 minutes, when he reacted first to slide a low shot into the bottom corner.

Rather than seeing the game out, VW conceded a sloppy second, when a long free kick by-passed everyone, for an Abbey player to head in unmarked at the back post.

With AR pushing for an equaliser, and VW still looking threatening for a fourth, some great work and cross by Jake Baker found Casey on the edge of the box, who rounded their defender but was brought down on 87 minutes.

Thankfully Casey got back to his feet to slot home the spot kick, and ensure a deserved and welcome win for the home side.

We wish AR the best for the season, and congratulate VW for a strong team performance.
