Windsor v VWFC
29/09/2020 Windsor 2-2 Virginia Water
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
Enow 'Smiles' Ojong (centre) mobbed by teammates after his goal
What a terrific match, played in good spirit, in front of a bumper crowd at Stag Meadow. The first 30 minutes were dominated by Windsor, who created many chances, and had the benefit of an early goal after a long shot rebounded of Matt Jones and fell kindly for a tap in for Danny Horscroft.
After Virginia Water rode the storm, they grew in confidence, upped the intensity and dominated from then on for large periods of the game. Josh Dillon was denied by a brilliant save by Windsor’s young goalkeeper Nojus Tinovas, and Casey Bocarro’s follow up went narrowly wide. Waters had many quality set pieces, but failed to capitalise.
1-0 down at the break, the visitors picked up the pace after the restart, and deserved to draw level, and when Bocarro was brought down inside the box, Josh Hill slotted home the resulting spot kick. Many other chances came and went, with Dillon just missing with a header, and also having a few shots saved or sail just over and Bocarro also having a few more attempts on goal.
The introduction of Ryan Blake and Enow ‘Smiles’ Ojong, further strengthened Waters, and they got what could have been a deserved winner and lead, when Ojong rose to head home a corner on his first team debut. Credit to Windsor who fought back and were awarded a penalty late on. But Jones in goal was equal to it and made the save. After the penalty miss, Waters were looking good value for the win.
Then agony for away side when in the 89th minute, they failed to clear a cross, and Louis Sanders turned his defensive header into his own goal. Undaunted, Waters pressed again, had a penalty appeal turned down, forced a few corners, but some resolute defending and last ditch blocks, kept them out.
Both sides gave their all, and on balance, no team deserved to lose with football the winner on a great night at Stag Meadow, and a match that had everything. Waters wish Windsor a successful season.
