Defender Mike Chambers in action for Waters
Virginia Water’s Development team hosted a young but strong, fit and very good Thatcham Town Development team on Saturday. A match that, to be fair, the home team hung on well for a point in, mainly because of the defensive back five of Dan Roach, Dan Stevens, Ross Miller, Mike Chambers and Luke van Spall. Roach in particular, pulled off a couple of very good saves to deny Thatcham a winner during the game.
The away team played some very good football and knocked the ball around confidently and efficiently, making the Waters team work very hard to retrieve the ball and create chances themselves. In the first half the solid and reliable Michael Chambers - back in central defence - played a superb long ball to Casey Bocarro on the wing, who took the ball down well and expertly lobbed the goalkeeper with his left foot. It was a very direct, but effective goal, and put Waters one-up after 15 minutes.
However, this Thatcham team had quality on and off the ball, and were always going to get back in this match. Their goal came in the second half when striker Will Frank broke through the centre of Waters’ defence and prodded the ball into the net to make it 1-1.
There were not too many clear-cut chances after that, from both teams, because of the defensive units; Ross Miller had an excellent game leading the way for Waters. There were some good moments from new signing Ruben Bande on the wing showing good skills, confidence and potential, along with Bocarro on other wing. Van Spall on the left side of the defence proved again what an important player he is to the team giving balance and width with his natural left foot.
However, the overall view from the home management team was that the Waters team were a little outnumbered in certain areas of the pitch - something that they will surely address.
