VWFC vs Windlesham United Firsts
03/11/2018 Virginia Water Devs 0-1 Windlesham United Firsts
Surrey County Intermediate Cup
Report by Pete Stevens
Goalkeeper Dan Roach
The first round of the Surrey County Cup saw the Virginia Water Development team come up against Windlesham United’s first team, at The Timbers. Unfortunately, for the home side, there was not too much to report on, nor any highlights, in what was probably the home team’s worst performance of the season so far.
An experienced team was put out for this particular match but Waters were unable to break through this determined Windlesham team. The first ten minutes was the best spell for Waters - they put the away team on the back foot with good possession, without though, really creating any significant chances. Windlesham grew with confidence as the first half went on; going close on a couple of occasions and their attacking midfielder - who was probably the best performer on the day - hit the post with a header.
Waters were hoping for better things in the second half, but it was Windlesham who broke the deadlock after 50 minutes from a set piece, when Waters were caught out and communication let them down. A few attempts went off target as Waters tried to get back into the game, but again, without really testing the away team’s goalkeeper, it was a frustrating afternoon.
The last twenty minutes saw Waters bring on young lads Robbie Greenwood, Gent Shilova, and Dan Stevens to try and bring some life into this match. It almost paid off when Greenwood put through Shilova, who broke into the box, but with the goalkeeper closing him down, he put the ball wide of him and unfortunately, the post also.
Waters now have a week off and hopefully will recharge to produce a better performance next time out.
