Reigate Priory vs VWFC
08/04/2017 Reigate Priory 3 - 5 Virginia Water
Surrey Elite League Reserve Division
Report by Steve Cox
Virginia Water’s last away game of the season at Reigate was beset with personnel problems which saw them make the journey with a bare 11, including manager Rob Lamb.
The team played some good football considering the missing of many key players. Waters took the lead after 9 minutes when the impressive Steve Mills fired in a low cross that was expertly turned home near post by Mike Chambers. Although having plenty of possession Waters could not find a way to increase their lead and were made to pay as Reigate struck back with 2 quick goals midway through the first half, firstly direct from a free kick then minutes later taking the lead when poor defending down the left flank allowed Reigate to score from close in.
Waters continued to play some decent football without looking over threatening but 5 minutes from halftime, from a Sam Devoil cross, a brilliant Chambers header from 12 yards flew into the far corner of the goal to make it 2-2 at the break, it was the least Waters deserved.
The second half began to see a tired looking Reigate allow Waters to look much the better team, and they were rewarded with two fine goals from Sam Meadows, the first in the 60th minute as he muscled his way into the box before firing home from a tight angle well with his left foot, and then quickly grabbed Waters 4th goal after fine play by Mills allowed him to turn a fire home from 10 yards.
Waters were in command now and despite being injured with a pulled hamstring, player-manager Lamb was on hand to turn home Mills’ cross for Waters nap hand and put the game beyond Reigate.
With five minutes left, and the away side needlessly pushing forward, Reigate made the most of an exposed Waters defence by scoring a consolation goal which left the final score at 3-5 to a tired but happy Waters team.
