VWFC vs Ash United
11/02/2017 Virginia Water 2 vs 1 Ash United
Surrey Elite League Reserve Division
Report by Steve Cox
Waters returned to the Timbers for the first time in weeks and on a difficult playing surface managed to win a tough match against a stubborn Ash Utd.
As is becoming an extremely bad habit, Waters started off the game really poorly and compounded the slow start by conceding a poor goal inside of 10 minutes. Gradually they warmed to their task and began to threaten an equaliser. Now the issue was getting past a really good Ash goalkeeper who pulled off 3 fine saves before, in the 32nd minute, a powerful Sam Devoil drive finally put Waters level. It was deserved but a battling Ash Utd held out well to the half time break and left Waters in little doubt that victory would not come easily in the second half.
The performance of the Waters lads’ second half was impressive, they were dominant in all areas of the pitch. The introduction of Aaron Nevitt with 30 minutes left into central midfield raised Waters’ level of intensity and it was only Ash’s impressive keeper who thwarted Waters’ efforts to take the lead.
With 20 minutes left the winning goal finally arrived courtesy of a superb Callum Taylor set piece delivery and a fine glancing header from the irrepressible Devoil whose brace had put his team 2-1 up.
It could have been more but great goal keeping and lack of luck in the box meant that Waters had to settle for a close fought 2-1 victory.
