VWFC vs Chinnor
09/09/2017 Virginia Water Reserves 4 - 1 Chinnor Reserves
Hellenic League Division Two East
Report by Rob Lamb
After the heavy defeat away to Chalvey Sports the week before, Virginia Water Reserves knew that anything other than three points wouldn't be good enough against a Chinnor side that were coming to The Timbers on the back of a win against Thame Rangers Development.
Waters' warm up was good, the players were switched on and eager to impress - the momentum was good and this was carried out onto the pitch. Waters started the game well and looked composed in all areas, it was a massive improvement on the week before. The players worked hard for each other, the communication was good throughout and the Reserves Management had a feeling it was going to be a good day.
Alex Saunders, coming back from injury, worked hard and his strength, power and pace put Waters 1-0 up at half time, although with the number of chances they had, Waters should have gone in at half time 3-0 up.
The half time team talk however, not for the first time, fell on deaf ears and Chinnor scored pretty much straight from the kick off. The home side's heads went down, however, Waters stuck at it, dug deep and with 30 minutes to go they got a 2nd through Sam Dennison.
You could sense that Chinnor were now getting frustrated and moments later Alex Ssenbulya took a heavy blow to his leg and had to be taken off, and the high tackle led to the offending Chinnor player being sent off.
Virginia Water capitalised on the extra man advantage and got a third and fourth towards the end of the game. Sam Devoil got the vital 3rd finishing coolly past the goalkeeper when one-on-one, and Liam Shanahan scored his first goal of the new season after a nice move down the left side saw him race in behind the defence to finish the game.
It was a good win for Waters, and for manager Rob Lamb, it was nice to see players playing with smiles on their faces again!
MoM = Sam Dennison
