Waters in action against Royal Wootton Bassett Town
Virginia Water undertook the long trek to Royal Wootton Bassett Town on a frosty night, and were unlucky not to return home with at least a draw for their entire endeavour and missed chances.
On a great surface both sides started well, with the visitors playing the better football for long periods. Jake Baker had an early chance, but his shot on the turn went over the bar from close range, and Waters then saw a succession of corners and long throws cause the home side problems, but all to no avail.
Against the run of play, the home side went ahead on 34 minutes, with a neat turn and volley from midfielder Steven Yeardley, although manager Ceri Jones felt that his side could have dealt with the initial cross a little better.
Not daunted by this Waters continued to play, and from a deep Louis Sanders corner, Finn Evered headed against a post, and Adam McNamara followed up to tap home the equaliser on 38 minutes – honours even at half time.
The second half again saw the visitors shade it, but they conceded a sloppy goal on the hour, when a long cross from the left was misjudged and striker TJ Bohane headed home from 6 yards out. Waters pressed hard for another equaliser and saw chances come and go, and were boosted by the return of Casey Bocarro, who himself went close after forcing the goalkeeper into a last ditch save with his right leg.
More set piece opportunities and half chances came and went, whilst at the other end Matt Jones made a great save to keep the score at 2-1. However, as hard as they tried, the deserved draw on the night did not materialise for the away side.
Not taking anything away from Royal Wootton Basset Town, they took their chances from mistakes by the away side, and Waters wish them well for the rest of the season.
