VWFC vs Brimscombe & Thrupp
24/11/2018 Virginia Water 1-1 Brimscombe & Thrupp
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
Adam Mills for Waters
It was a deserved draw (just) for Virginia Water, that felt like a win against high flying Brimscombe & Thrupp.
With a very strong wind in their favour in the first half, Waters dominated proceedings, with Jake Baker, Scott Jackson and Lorenzo ‘Lenny’ Di Felice all going close. Waters took the lead on 21 minutes, when Di Felice, who calmly rounded the goalkeeper to slot home, intercepted a stray back pass.
There were only sporadic attacks at the other end, which the home defence comfortably dealt with, in particular the excellent Finn Evered, Adam Mills and Matt Jones in goal. Waters knew they would need more than the one goal before the break, with the elements against them in the second half, and were unlucky not to go two up, when they hit the post from a long throw wide on the left. Despite their efforts and numerous quality corners - that saw both Evered and Baker narrowly head over at times, Waters held a precarious 1-0 lead at the break.
Brimscombe & Thrupp threw everything at Waters in the second half, trying to take advantage of the conditions, and got an early equaliser within 15 minutes of the restart. However, the home side were not finished, and thought they had gone ahead on 70 minutes, when Di Felice went through and smashed a left foot drive into the top corner, only for Jackson to judged off side in the build-up. Jackson too had another couple of good attempts on goal, as Waters battled for the three points from the game.
As time wore on, the hosts had Jones to thank for a number of saves, one exceptional in particular from a brilliant volley by the away striker, which was parried away with his right hand. There were a couple of last ditch tackles by Liam Whyte and Joe McBride in midfield, but with the central defenders holding firm, Waters got a point from an excellent match that could have gone either way.
Ceri Jones was magnanimous with the draw, “We wish Brimscombe & Thrupp the best of luck for the remainder of the season, and cannot praise them enough for the way their squad and management enjoyed our hospitality – a great bunch of lads.”
