VWFC v Fairford Town
27/10/2018 Virginia Water 3-1 Fairford Town
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water achieved back to back victories with a deserved win over Fairford Town at Stag Meadow on Saturday, in what was their first home match for 4 weeks. Indeed, had they taken their chances in the first half, they could, and should, have been 3 or 4 up at the break, but only had two goals from Adam McNamara (21 mins) and Jake Baker (34 mins) to show for their efforts.
The first goal came from a sweeping move where the excellent Liam Whyte found Louis Sanders with a cross field ball, and his cross was volleyed home by McNamara. Jake Baker then forced the away goalkeeper into an error, which then allowed him a tap in to make it 2-0 - Baker putting in a trade mark high energy 90 minutes shift!
Further chances came and went with McNamara, Baker and Josh Guichard all going close. At the other end, the back four, in particular the dominant Adam Mills, and Matt Jones in goal, comfortably dealt with anything thrown at them.
It should have been easier for the home side in the second half, but they had a difficult early period where Fairford exerted some pressure. Waters gave the ball away sloppily, and conceded a penalty when the away striker was brought down in the box. Fairford converted from the spot on 53 minutes as they looked to get back into the game.
Thankfully, for manager Ceri Jones, Waters rode the storm, but they missed more chances to secure the win. The front three, Lenny Di Felice and Scott Jackson all went close, before Di Felice finally sealed the win with a great shot from McNamara’s lay off on 70 minutes.
Jones was delighted with what was a deserved win in the end, but Fairford kept going to their credit, and Waters wish them well for the rest of the season. For the home side, it is now two daunting long haul trips away to Royal Wootton Bassett Town and Bishops Cleeve in the next week, that will surely test their resolve.
