Royal Holloway Old Boys vs VWFC
20/07/2017 Royal Holloway Old Boys 0 - 6 Virginia Water
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water kicked off their pre-season in emphatic style, with a comfortable win against close friends and neighbours Royal Holloway Old Boys.
Played on the stunning pitches at Royal Holloway University, the match was always keenly contested and fairly even after 30 minutes, until the deadlock was finally broken.
Up until then, Waters had gone close with Josh Guichard hitting the bar, and Paul Burrows, Finn Evered and Jake Baker all having a number of efforts on goal.
But first goal duly arrived in the 32nd minute, when Dan Whatford ran on to a through ball, to calmly slot past the goalkeeper.
Within minutes Ryan Curtis had added a second in similar style after being played in by newcomer Richard Bond.
Further goals came from Curtis, Tom Curran, Guichard and the returning Lorenzo Di Felice.
To the Old Boys credit, they kept working tirelessly, but with Waters having a strong side available, and the Old Boys a few away, the strength in depth and fitness prevailed in the end.
Manager Ceri Jones was pleased to note the clean sheet at the other end of the pitch, where apart from two good saves by Matt Jones in goal, the lads at the back looked solid enough, with some tough matches around the corner to test them.
Waters extended their thanks to our hosts, and wish them well on their first season in the Surrey Elite Intermediate League.
For Waters, it was a good way to start the preparations before their debut in Hellenic 1 East Division.
