VWFC vs Didcot Town Reserves
14/04/2018 Virginia Water 2-1 Didcot Town Reserves
Hellenic Division One East
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water manager Ceri Jones was delighted with the bigger picture, where the win for his side guaranteed back to back promotions – and said it has been “a real privilege to manage such a talented and close knit squad.
A further vote of thanks to all the Clubs who have tweeted their congratulations – thank you all.”
As for the match itself, it was the visitors who came away with all the credit for their heroic and gutsy defensive display, having been forced to field a depleted side of only nine players. Waters had all the possession and territory, as a side in their position with the extra players should have, but failed to capitalise on all their dominance, converting only two of many chances.
The goal scorers were Adam Mills on 24 minutes in the first half, and Max Samyint on 61 minutes in the second half.
In addition, many chances came and went, even if not in the right areas at times.
Adam McNamara, Louis Sanders, Josh Hill, Josh Guichard, Steve Williams and Ryan Curtis all had efforts on goal, which on another day they would feel they should have converted - albeit that could have been an injustice to Didcot on the day.
To their credit, Didcot hung on in the game and got a deserved consolation late on, when their striker ghosted past a few of the Waters players, and chipped goalkeeper Matt Jones from distance.
It was not the most inspiring game, but the result and achievement for Virginia Water cannot be overlooked as they will be playing in step 5 of the non-league pyramid next season, showing remarkable progress in the short space of time since Jones took the helm in the 2015/16 season.
Waters would like to express a big thank you to all concerned, and now they can look forward to trying to secure the Division One East title on either the 26th or 28th April, needing 3 points from those two games to do it, and then towards their debut in the Hellenic Premier Division next season.
