AFC Spelthorne vs VWFC
04/12/2016 AFC Spelthorne Sports 4 - 2 Virginia Water
Surrey Elite League
Report by Ceri Jones
It was a real bad day at the office as Virginia Water slumped to a surprise defeat at our close friends and rivals AFC Spelthorne.
Waters got what they deserved – nothing! Manager Ceri Jones will hope this does give the team a kick that they need of late, even if Waters remain in the top 3 of the league table.
Both teams appeared lethargic in the first half, But Waters took the lead when Adam McNamara rounded their keeper from a long clearance by Matt Jones. The away side then conceded a sloppy equaliser, when Spelthorne scored a worldy from the edge of the box after Waters gave their player an age to pick his spot.
Sadly Waters played no better in the second half, although they still had a quite a few chances.
Unusually they were slack at the back and conceded a second when the ball simply floated over all their heads, for the home striker to run through unmarked on goal to slot home.
Waters quickly equalised when Steve Williams fired home from an acute angle.
But on 50 minutes Dan Whatford was harshly sent off for a second bookable offence, and that changed the game.
As Waters then conceded two more soft goals, and were chasing the game with 10 men, and a couple playing with injuries.
Waters had a few chances to pull a goal or two back, but it was not to be.
Waters will be hoping to put this reverse behind them and bounce back next week in the league cup quarter-final away at Laleham.
