VWFC vs Laleham
04/03/2017 Virginia Water 1 - 0 Laleham
Surrey Elite Intermediate League
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water continued their terrific form, and season, to date, with a ninth straight win against the form team of the league, Laleham, who had won their last five matches.
But Waters were made to fight incredibly hard in a tough local derby, and had it not been for yet another late penalty save by Matt Jones (MoM), and a point blank save moments later, it could have been very different!
With a very strong wind in their favour, Laleham pushed hard to open the scoring, but all crosses and set pieces were dealt with very well by the home side’s back five, without any major alarms.
Surprisingly Waters were not firing around the park, and not at their fluent best, but had the better of the chances, with Adam McNamara, Ryan Curtis, Jake Baker, Liam Hill, Paul Burrows and Josh Hill all having efforts on goal.
Despite being a modest 5 out of 10 in the first half, it was reassuring to reach the break at 0-0, with the elements in Waters’ favour after the break.
The wind died down in the second half, but Waters picked up their game and started to push and dominate both territory and possession. Burrows, McNamara and Curtis all went close again, with Burrows also hitting the post with a long range effort.
The goal, when it came, was nodded in from one of many corners by Adam Mills, from a great delivery by Louis Sanders, and Waters should have then gone on to add to the score, but it was not to be.
Manager Ceri Jones was impressed with the impact off the bench, with Steve Williams, Dan Whatford and Sanders highlighting the strength and depth of the squad, whilst displaying a terrific attitude also.
The 3 points were hugely important, and just about preserved in a great match, played in excellent spirit throughout.
Well done lads!
