VWFC vs Balham
22/07/2017 Virginia Water 2 - 0 Balham
Report by Ceri Jones
Waters produced a terrific performance to win well against Combined Counties Premier League opponents, and keep another clean sheet in the process.
In a match played in driving rain at times, but thankfully on the 4G pitch at Royal Holloway University, the first half was impressively fast and furious, with both sides playing some great attacking football.
For the home side, Paul Burrows went close with two early shots on goal, and Waters could have opened the scoring sooner, with Steve Williams, Finn Evered and Martin Peters also going close.
At the other end, the defence comfortably dealt with most of what Balham could throw at them, albeit Matt Jones in goal had to make a smart save when the full back cut through to create a one on one chance.
Evered and Marc Lansdowne (MoM) were dominant in the air, ably supported by Josh and Liam Hill and Adam Mills in the full back roles.
At 0-0 at half time, Waters knew they were in a top match against good friends at Balham.
With a number of players absent from the last match manager Ceri Jones was pleased to see some players make their mark from the reserve team.
The opening goal deservedly came, when Josh Guichard broke clear, to square the ball to Sam Devoil to calmly slot home.
Waters then kicked on and got a second following some battling by Burrows, that allowed Peters to go through on the keeper, and side foot home into the bottom corner.
To their credit, Balham fought back hard, but were restricted to some long range shots, which did not trouble the home side too greatly.
Michael Chambers went close to adding a third from a corner, but no further chances of note then followed.
Waters wish Balham well in the CC Premier League, and hope that they can continue to build on this fine start to pre-season.
