Milton United vs VWFC
24/03/2018 Milton United 1-3 Virginia Water
Hellenic Division One East
Report by Ceri Jones
An away win was a great way for Virginia Water to bounce back after the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup midweek loss to Bracknell Town. Milton United made it very difficult for Waters in a scoreless first half, where neither side carved out too many clear-cut opportunities - in fact, the bigger threats for both sides came from set pieces.
It was not a surface where Waters felt they could play their quick and flowing football, yet they tried, and although the back five were rarely troubled they did not create enough in the final third to break the deadlock. Waters’ best efforts were from Sam Devoil, Adam McNamara and Lennie Di Felice.
The second half was more open, with Waters dominating from the outset. It was important for both teams to get that elusive first goal, and when it came on 54 minutes, it was Richard Bond who nodded in from a corner for the visitors.
Thereafter Waters should have kicked on, but had Matt Jones to thank for two excellent saves after uncharacteristic poor back passes had put Waters under pressure.
Soon after, the away side went up field with a rapid counter attack, where Josh Hill fed Adam McNamara, who crossed for the predatory Josh Guichard to head home and finish off a great team goal! The third soon followed, when from a pinpoint pass Hill fed Di Felice, who smashed home to make it 0-3.
Milton, however, were not beaten and converted a penalty and with both sides having further chances, it was surprising there were no more goals. This was mainly in part to another impressive display by Adam Mills (MoM) at centre back, and Jones in goal, keeping Milton at bay.
Jake Baker, Di Felice and McNamara all went close to adding to the score, but it was the result and the three points that was the main objective, and Waters deserved that.
Manager Ceri Jones was pleased with the job done by his side and wishes Milton well for the remainder of the season.
