Laleham vs VWFC
26/11/2016 Laleham 1 - 2 Virginia Water
Surrey Elite League
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water kept their amazing run going with a very hard fought local derby, which was fittingly settled by a wonder goal by Louis Sanders.
Waters dominated possession, territory and chances, but on a difficult pitch that made fluent passing and movement not so easy, it was a battle to the end.
Both teams started brightly, with Waters forcing a number of corners, from which Jake Baker, Steve Williams and Liam Hill all had chances. Baker then was put through by Sanders, but his shot hit the bar.
At the other end Matt Jones was fairly quiet, with Josh Hill, Adam Mills, Finn Evered and Max Samyint (MoM) in control, with only the threat from set pieces to contend with.
Mills, Williams and Baker also saw some headers go close, but a 0-0 half time scoreline was a little less than the away side deserved.
After the break Waters had to adapt to a more direct game, and knew their speed and quality would eventually tell.
Joe McBride battled to earn a corner, which was only half cleared for Williams to chest down and smash home.
Waters had some further chances to close out the game, but harshly conceded a penalty at the other end, which Jones saved superbly.
Soon after Laleham got a controversial equaliser when a long cross was caught by Jones, but their striker (with no eye on the ball), clattered into him and the home side scored from the melee that followed.
Waters went for the win, and Sanders forced the goalkeeper into a good save, and there was further pressure from set pieces, before Sanders beat his man to rifle home into the top corner from 20 yards, and keep Waters in the top three with games in hand.
A real tough match, that the away side just came through, although deserved.
Credit to both sides for a bruising, but very sporting match!
Well done lads!
