Westside vs VWFC
25/02/2017 Westside 0 - 3 Virginia Water
Surrey Elite Intermediate League
Report by Ceri Jones
Another excellent win for Virginia Water and a terrific performance on a difficult pitch for two good footballing sides, played in good spirit in driving wind and rain!!
After suffering a two hour journey to get there (due to Crystal Palace playing at home!), with no time for warm up, Waters were second best in the early exchanges against a team currently 2nd in the league.
But when Waters settled from circa 20 minutes in, it was one way traffic.
Waters went ahead when Josh Hill smashed in a great free kick after Adam McNamara was brought down on the edge of the area. The second soon followed, when Marc Lansdowne headed home one of Finn Evered’s trademark throw ins.
The next goal, Waters’ third and last, and the best, came from a brilliant strike by Paul Burrows, rifling home into the top corner.
Either side of the goals in the first half McNamara, Louis Sanders, Burrows and Lansdowne all went close, whilst at the other end Matt Jones had little to do, and was well protected by the clean sheet factory of Hill, Lansdowne, Evered and Adam Mills (MoM).
Liam Hill and Joe McBride bossed the midfield battle, with Jake Baker, Burrows, Sanders and McNamara causing the home side many problems with their crisp passing and movement.
At 3-0 up at the break, and job half done, Waters were in a good place!
The second half saw the weather deteriorate further, but the introduction of Ryan Curtis, Dan Whatford and Steve Williams off the bench maintained the momentum and dominance, despite Westside creating a few more chances.
Jones made a couple of good saves to keep them scoreless, whilst Curtis, Burrows, Josh Hill and McBride all had chances to add to the score, but were denied by some bad luck and good keeping on the home side’s part.
A crucial win in the race for the title, especially with Waters’ chronic fixture backlog, in front of their hardcore travelling fans!!
Well done lads!!
