AFC Aldermaston vs VWFC
23/09/2017 AFC Aldermaston 1 - 1 Virginia Water
Hellenic League Division One East
Report by Ceri Jones
An entertaining match, even if frustrating that Waters conceded in the last few minutes gifting a goal to the hosts from a hopeful cross forward that Aldermaston’s striker somehow managed to head backwards over the stranded Matt Jones in goal.
That said, early on Waters could have been two or three behind as Aldermaston missed a number of good chances. It was 30 minutes before the away side got going and dominated from there on. Ryan Curtis missed from close range, after a great run and shot by Josh Hill.
Waters had some corners and shots from distance, but not enough to trouble the home goalkeeper. At the other end, the defence held firm, with a particular stand out performance by Finn Evered (MoM) at centre back.
In the second half Waters had the lion’s share of territory and chances, and took the lead with a terrific run and shot by Lorenzo Di Felice that gave the keeper no chance. There were then a number of chances to put the game beyond doubt, but Waters did not have their shooting boots on; chipping at the keeper when through one-on-one, a couple of shoots going narrowly wide and over the bar, and many corners and crosses that were failed to convert.
AFC Aldermaston will say they deserved the fortuitous goal, and on balance it was probably a fair result, albeit they could have snatched it at the death - stopped by a great save by Jones in goal.
At the other end, a sweeping move saw Josh Hill hammer a shot goal bound only for the defender to block with what appeared to be a fine goalkeeper save – most in the ground felt that, apart from the man who counts who makes the decisions.
It was honours even at the end of the day, and whilst not all 3 points, it was a much improved performance, effort and spirit from the Virginia Water lads.
