VWFC vs AFC Aldermaston
26/04/2018 Virginia Water 4-0 AFC Aldermaston
Hellenic Division One East
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water made it memorable back-to-back league titles in some style – adding the Hellenic Division One East title to last season’s Surrey Elite League title, with a comfortable home win against a resilient AFC Aldermaston side.
Due to fixture backlogs, Waters were grateful to the visitors who made the journey on a Thursday evening, and were sporting throughout, even if they themselves did not have much to play for.
Adam McNamara got the scoring underway, when he rifled home from close range on 6 minutes, and could have added a couple more for himself in a tireless display. The second, that calmed the nerves, was a terrific solo effort by Richard Bond on 31 minutes, as he cut inside from the left to chip the keeper from 20 yards into the top corner – a goal fitting for the occasion!
Josh Hill then hit the woodwork with a volley, and Josh Guichard, Steve Williams (MoM for a majestic display in midfield), Adam Mills and Louis Sanders all went close with further efforts on goal.
To their credit, Aldermaston played some good football of their own in the second half and came close a couple of times from set pieces.
Waters got their third on 61 minutes, when Sanders hit a 25-yard screamer into the bottom corner. Waters wrapped up the match, and the title, in the 81st minute when substitute Sam Devoil tapped in from close range, following a bit of a goalmouth scramble from a corner.
Manager Ceri Jones was understandably proud of his squad, “It was a fitting result for a great young group of lads, who deserve all the credit, along with the totally committed help of coach Richard Banks and assistant Matt Edwards, and of course, our sponsors, whose generosity makes this all a reality – thank you all and enjoy the celebrations!!”
The Hellenic Premier Division now awaits, with some real tough challenges ahead!
