VWFC vs Chinnor
19/08/2017 Virginia Water 3 - 0 Chinnor
Hellenic League Division One East
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water continued their excellent start to the season with a very convincing win over a powerful Chinnor side.
It would be fair to say were it not for some poor finishing and great goal keeping by Ben Taunton in the Chinnor goal, it could have been a much bigger winning margin.
The home side played fluent and quick football, that was good on the eye, with a number of players going close early on. Lorenzo Di Felice hit the crossbar and had another couple of efforts go narrowly wide, as did Steve Williams, Paul Burrows, Josh Guichard and Liam Hill - all in a frantic first half, whilst at the other end Matt Jones was rarely troubled in goal, and was well protected by a dominant back four. With the defence so commanding it was fitting that CB Finn Evered (MoM) opened the scoring, when he headed home Liam Hill’s corner on 42 minutes.
That relieved some frustration for Waters, as it seemed like being one of those days. Waters then withstood the pressing of Chinnor early in the second half, and failed to add to their lead initially when Josh Hill saw his spot kick saved, after Burrows had been brought down.
However it was not long before Waters got their second, when Joe McBride put Guichard through, to rifle home on 67 minutes. Before the third goal arrived the returning Adam McNamara went close, as did Guichard, McBride and Dan Whatford, and Liam Hill saw his free kick well saved by Taunton. Waters’ third came courtesy of a run and good finish by Louis Sanders on 79 minutes.
Sadly for the home side, they didn’t add to the score, but this was certainly a strong performance and keeps Waters well placed at this early part of the season.
Good luck to Chinnor for the season ahead.
