AFC Cubo vs VWFC
18/03/2017 AFC Cubo 0 - 1 Virginia Water
Surrey Elite Intermediate League
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water continued their remarkable run of winning every match in 2017, but were made to fight all the way by a gutsy display by a Cubo team, with a knack of scoring many goals along the way.
Thankfully the away defence stood firm, in particular Adam Mills and Finn Evered (MoM) who kept the home strike force at bay, ably supported by Max Samyint, Josh Hill and Matt Jones in goal.
On a 3G pitch into a strong wind, Waters’ passing was patient, if not decisive in the final third, but were rarely tested by Cubo.
Adam McNamara, Ryan Curtis, Jake Baker and Josh Hill all had attempts on goal, albeit not forcing the Cubo keeper into many saves.
Waters’ goal when it came on the half hour, followed a great one-two between Curtis and McNamara, which saw Curtis round the keeper to slot home.
The midfield battle was stretched, with Waters controlling territory and possession. At 1-0 up at the break, with the wind in their favour for the second half, Waters hoped to kick on and score a few more, but it was not to be.
Curtis, McNamara, Josh Guichard and Josh Hill all went close, whilst at the other end, what few chances Cubo had didn’t hit the target.
Although Waters saw the game out, as stated, it was a tough battle against a team who have had some good results of late – so above all, the result and three points was the major objective, which was achieved!
There is plenty to work on with Horsley on Tuesday and County Cup semi-final next Saturday away to Chessington, but the run goes on, and Waters are now up to 2nd in the league, closing in on Tooting Bec at the top!
Well done lads!
