VWFC vs Bagshot
24/10/2017 Virginia Water 5-0 Bagshot
Surrey County Intermediate Cup
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water cruised in to round two of the Surrey County Cup against near neighbours Bagshot, but only after they were made to work extremely hard, particularly in the first half. The visitors started well, and were the more dominant in the early exchanges, forcing Matt Jones into a great save that he turned on to the bar from close range.
This spurred Waters into action, and a flowing move saw Dan Whatford hit a post, then on the rebound, Bagshot’s excellent goalkeeper made a great save, only for Ryan Curtis to prod home on 19 minutes.
Waters had a few more chances with Adam McNamara, Finn Evered and Josh Guichard all going close.
On 27 minutes, the home side doubled their lead, when Guichard anticipated a cross from Whatford to get inside his marker and slot home.
Soon after Waters saw a penalty come back off the post, but pressed on for more goals to put the match beyond the visitors.
At 2-0 up at the break, and the strong wind now in Waters’ favour, they came out and dominated the second half, with further goals coming from Guichard and the goal of the game by Josh Hill, who volleyed in another Whatford cross.
The scoring was completed by Guichard, who got a deserved hat-trick when he converted a penalty on 77 minutes, after Whatford was brought down in the box.
At the other end, the defence were tremendous in keeping the clean sheet, albeit they had Jones to thank late on, when he saved at their striker’s feet when through one on one.
It was all positive on the night for the home side, as they progressed into the second round - as they have done in the other two cup competitions to date.
Manager Ceri Jones will now be hoping to keep up the momentum as Waters are back in league action with a real tough encounter against Wokingham & Emmbrook this Saturday.
