Chinnor vs VWFC
16/12/2017 Chinnor 0-2 Virginia Water
Hellenic Division One East
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water stormed to their eighth straight league win against a strong and spirited Chinnor side to wrap up 2017 in a positive fashion. In a match played in testing conditions on a difficult pitch, there was not much between the sides in a goalless first half, with few clear cut chances.
That said, Adam McNamara had a good goal ruled out for offside, which had the Waters management scratching their heads, as the home side had a defender on the near post. Lorenzo Di Felice had a number of good shots, as did Josh Guichard and Josh Hill and Finn Evered saw his header cleared off the line.
At the other end, Waters defended superbly, with Marc Lansdowne (MoM) in particular, a tower of strength.
Matt Jones made one great save in the first half and he and the defence handled all crosses and set pieces thrown at them.
In the second half, the away side got on top in the midfield battle with Steve Williams and Joe McBride controlling things. On 49 minutes, Waters then got the breakthrough when Liam Hill and McNamara combined down the right to put Guichard through, and he rounded goalkeeper Ben Taunton to slot home.
Further chances came and went as Waters did their best to play some flowing football. The two Josh’s both went close again, as did Di Felice, Williams, Lansdowne and McNamara (who deserved a goal of his own for all his hard work).
Waters were rarely troubled at the back, and thankfully put the game beyond reach when the ball was passed to Williams, who put Josh Hill away, and he in turn chipped the advancing Taunton to cap a great win and performance.
Manager Ceri Jones was pleased with the three points; he and the team have earned a well-deserved break, as Waters now have no match until the 6th January.
