VWFC vs Smallfield
04/02/2017 Virginia Water 3 - 0 Smallfield
Surrey County FA Intermediate Cup
Report by Ceri Jones
At last Virginia Water got this match played - at the fourth attempt, and after a real tough first half, they finally prevailed.
Waters started slowly, showing that they had only played once in 7 weeks.
Both teams hit the woodwork twice, Louis Sanders and Paul Burrows deserving a bit more luck.
The first half was goalless but Waters had Matt Jones to thank for a terrific one handed save, and at the other end should have scored, with Adam McNamara, Jake Baker and Dan Whatford all going close.
The first goal was crucial, and thankfully Waters got it, when Josh Hill played in one of many crosses, that Ryan Curtis headed on for Burrows to tap home.
From then on, Waters dominated, with the lads at the back gaining in confidence and comfort, Liam Hill and Joe McBride (MoM) running midfield, and Burrows, McNamara, Curtis and Whatford causing the visitors many problems.
The second came from Adam McNamara, who was put through after some great work by Burrows, and then McNamara completed the win with his second and Waters’ third, smashing home from the edge of the area.
It was certainly a much tougher match than the scoreline suggested, and full credit to the visitors.
For the Waters it’s a home quarter-final on the 18th Feb versus Worplesdon, and a League Cup semi-final next Saturday versus league rivals Tooting Bec.
Got there in the end.
MoM = Joe McBride
