Godalming & Farncombe vs VWFC
11/03/2017 Godalming & Farncombe 1 - 3 Virginia Water
Surrey Elite Intermediate League
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water maintained their remarkable run of winning every game in 2017 so far with a hard fought victory away from home against Godalming & Farncombe.
G&F made Waters work very hard after going ahead with a penalty as early as the 10th minute, which proved to be the only shot Matt Jones had to save in the match, other than numerous crosses and set pieces.
Waters huffed and puffed in the first half, playing the better football, but couldn’t get the equaliser they were trying too hard to get!
Dan Whatford and Paul Burrows (MoM) went close with a few efforts on goal, as did Adam McNamara, Joe McBride, Liam Hill and Marc Lansdowne, but Waters were not at their fluent best.
With character and belief they picked up the pace in the second half, and it was mostly one way traffic, with further attempts from Steve Williams, Burrows, Lansdowne, Ryan Curtis and Josh Hill - and as it looked like being one of those days, Waters got a deserved equaliser when Burrows drilled in a free kick that found the bottom corner.
Then Waters went for it, and Burrows again scored a terrific winner, dribbling past a few players to rifle the ball into the right hand corner, whilst running away from goal.
The pressure was thankfully maintained, and Waters got a late third, when again Burrows fed McNamara, who in turn laid the ball off for Curtis to smash first time past the goalkeeper.
A strong performance, with the result moving Waters up to third, with many games in hand!
The big run in stays on track and Waters remain in the frame for all three trophies, but the management team of Ceri Jones and Richard Banks will not let the team get carried away.
Thanks to G&F for their hospitality.
Well done lads!
MoM = Paul Burrows
