VWFC vs Spelthorne Sports
08/08/2017 Virginia Water 2 - 3 Spelthorne Sports
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water completed pre-season with a narrow defeat against local rivals and friends, Spelthorne Sports from the CCPL.
Although missing four key players, Waters had the opportunity to look over a few reserve team players, who all acquitted themselves very well against higher ranked opponents.
The home side went ahead with a great goal, made by the two best players on the night - Josh Hill at right back and Jake Baker at right midfield. They linked well down the right for Hill to cross when in behind Spelthorne’s defence, for Ryan Curtis to strongly head home.
Uncharacteristically, Waters conceded two sloppy goals just after the half hour, when they were caught ball watching on the first, for the away striker to head home unmarked, then gave the ball away deep in their own half, and were punished with an excellent goal by Spelthorne.
The usual raft of changes at half time saw Waters push forward for an equaliser, and missed a few good chances. However, they were caught with a good counter-attacking goal, that was finished off when Spelthorne’s shot went in off a post.
The last 15 minutes of the half was all VWFC, with Lorenzo Di Felice firing in a wonder goal from 25 yards with his left foot into the top corner. Then Waters somehow managed to miss three glorious one on one chances to level, but all efforts were a little timid and did not trouble the away goalkeeper enough.
A draw would have been a fair result, but that’s football sometimes!
It was another good workout for both sides ahead of Waters’ first league match.
Good luck for the season to Spelthorne Sports.
