VWFC v Longlevens
23/02/2019 Virginia Water 2-2 Longlevens
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
Waters' Jake Baker
Virginia Water threw away a two goal lead, as they conceded an equaliser with practically the last kick of the game, against a good Longlevens squad, intent on competing as best they could.
The visitors started well, and forced Matt Jones into a couple of sharp saves, as well as hitting the woodwork.
Against the run of play, Liam Whyte put the home side ahead on 21 minutes, heading in a Louis Sanders corner.
Back came the visitors, and threatened again, but on 38 minutes, Jake Baker’s left foot shot from a long throw, put Waters further ahead.
Bizarrely the home side had the better of the second half, yet managed to concede two goals without reply. The first, on the hour, came when a free kick from distance took a high bounce off a surprisingly poor playing surface at Stag Meadow, and beat Jones in goal. The second, with the last kick of the match, was due to some indecision in the home defence.
In between, Waters managed to hit the woodwork twice, through Whyte and Baker, and went close again with efforts from Whyte, Ruben Bande and Marc Lansdowne.
But at the end it was honours even and, sadly for Ceri Jones and his Waters side, it was a case of two points lost rather than a point won.
Waters wish Longlevens well for the remainder of the season.
