Holmer Green v VWFC
20/10/2018 Holmer Green 1-2 Virginia Water
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
Virginia Water bounced back from their recent defeats with a gutsy performance and hard fought win away to Holmer Green.
Waters went ahead on 6 minutes, when from a long throw, Joe McBride headed on for Josh Guichard to poke home from close range, despite the home teams’ protest of a handball. Waters bestowed a sloppy equaliser upon the home side soon after, when they failed to clear a number of times, deep inside their own half.
The away side went close a few times, with the front three of Guichard, Jake Baker and Adam McNamara really putting in a good shift of work and effort. This was rewarded when McNamara hit a cross-shot on 22 minutes, for Jake Baker to tap home and restore Waters’ lead.
A number of chances came and went for both sides, with the home team a little unfortunate not to get a penalty and having a goal disallowed, but Waters were also unlucky not to capitalise on a number of crosses and close range efforts of their own.The Waters defence held firm this time, with Josh Hill, Louis Sanders, Finn Evered and Adam Mills in particular, standing out, whilst Matt Jones comfortably dealt with anything thrown his way.
The three points were vital on the day, and although the home side could perhaps count themselves a little hard done by, the Waters players just shaded it for their effort and the way their spirit got them over the line after a tough few weeks.
Manager Ceri Jones was over the moon with the three points, and will be hoping this is a catalyst for a good run of form.
