Wantage Town v VWFC
06/04/2019 Wantage Town 3-1 Virginia Water
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
Waters' goalkeeper Matt Jones
A makeshift Virginia Water side travelled to title favourites Wantage Town for their final game of the season, and despite being competitive for much of the game, came away with a loss.
Waters got off to a poor start and fell behind to a sloppy goal, when they failed to clear a cross that bobbled around in the box for a while, before striker Ben Cook hit home to give Wantage the lead.
Soon after Steve Robertson for the hosts produced a great goal, as he swivelled and shot into the top corner, giving Matt Jones no chance in goal.
In between, Waters had a couple of good chances, with Maciej Tajs forcing the home goalkeeper into a couple of great saves. At 2-0 down at the break, Waters needed to pick up the tempo and get something from the second half, which they duly did.
Forced into a change and some positional adjustments, the visitors clawed their way back into the game when Tajs scored on 63 minutes, and then for a period Waters were on the front foot.
Waters felt aggrieved when they felt that Wantage’s goalkeeper probably should have seen a red card for pushing striker Adam McNamara in the face, but instead got away with a yellow.
Then Waters created a glorious chance to equalise, but Joe McBride saw his cross shot drift wide with just the goalkeeper to beat. Wantage then went up the pitch and scrambled in a killer third goal, which, apart from a couple of good saves by Jones in the Waters goal, and some shots from distance by the excellent Liam Whyte, was pretty much the last action parts of the match.
Waters wish Wantage well in their quest for promotion – they are a top side. Manager Ceri Jones was pleased with the performance and is proud of the season overall, “I would like to thank my players, coaching staff and supporters for a big effort in consolidating our position at step five in our first year at this level. Now for a well-earned rest for all, before it all starts again!”
