Easington Sports v VWFC
29/10/2019 Easington Sports 2-1 Virginia Water
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
Waters' goalscorer Louis Sanders
Virginia Water slumped to defeat after a long and difficult midweek journey to Easington Sports on Tuesday evening. The home side were better in the first half, albeit Waters should have gone ahead early on, when Josh Dillon went round the goalkeeper Adam Rimmer, only to see his goal bound effort deflected by a last ditch tackle, and sail agonisingly wide.
Easington’s first goal came Piers Walton - the striker cut inside Waters’ right back Josh Hill and hit a wonder strike into the top corner, giving Matt Jones no chance in the Waters goal.
Soon after it was 2-0, when Waters sloppily gave away a corner after failing to clear, and the resulting set piece saw centre back Bradley Cox nod home a free header at the back post. Virginia Water huffed and puffed without creating too much and went in at half time 2-0 down.
The second half belonged to Waters, and they got back into the game on 63 minutes with a great team goal finished off by Louis Sanders. Either side of this, Joel Drew, Lorenzo Di Felice and Sanders all went close, but too often the shots were from long distance and did not cause too much trouble, as indeed was the case at the other end.
Waters lost centre back Ryan Whyte on 78 minutes to a harsh second booking, when most thought the free kick was awarded the wrong way in the first place, but still Waters pressed for an equaliser, but just failed to do so whilst down to 10 men.
Manager Ceri Jones is aware that his side are slipping down the table, but is confident in his team, “A long hard battle lies ahead, although I am sure we will be up for the task. We wish Easington well after our third encounter already between the sides this season.”
