Brackley Town Saints v VWFC
22/01/2020 Brackley Town Saints 2-1 Virginia Water
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
A frustrated Josh Hill for Waters
Virginia Water undertook a long and tough midweek journey to Brackley Town, and undeservedly returned empty handed, losing to a late winner. Preparations were hampered when both Adam Mils and Finn Kelly-Lewis dropped out in the warm up, leaving Sam Cooley to play as an emergency centre back, which he did extremely well.
On a sticky surface, the visitors had much the better of the first half, and should have taken at least one or two of their chances, with Joel Drew, Dale Wright, Josh Dillon and Josh Hill all going close. The match turned against the run of play in first half stoppage time, when the home side were allowed to take a quick free kick, which caught Waters’ centre backs flatfooted. Home striker Ryan Knight went through on goal and was brought down in the box by Matt Jones. Knight took the resulting penalty, and Jones almost redeemed himself but just failed to stop the spot kick.
Instead of being ahead, Waters found themselves 1-0 down at the break. To the visitor’s credit, they battled hard to get back into the game, and got a deserved equaliser with a brilliant Dale Wright goal on 59 minutes.
From then on, it was end to end, with both goalkeepers in good form, then with a draw looking likely, a long ball was deflected into the path of Brackley’s George Ball. He had his shot well saved, but the rebound fell kindly to Knight at the back post to tap in the rebound with 5 minutes remaining.
Try as hard as Waters did, some resolute defending kept them out. Brackley could have further extended their lead in stoppage time as they were awarded a second penalty, but Knight blazed his kick over the bar. A two-goal margin at that time would have been harsh on the visitors, as it was a great effort by Waters on the night, showing a top attitude and effort in making the journey and contributing to an excellent game.
Waters wish Brackley Town Saints every success for the remainder of the season.
