Royal Wootton Bassett Town v VWFC
21/09/2019 Royal Wootton Bassett 1-3 Virginia Water
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
Goalkeeper Matt Jones in action
Virginia Water gained a much needed away win with a great squad effort at the excellent facilities of Royal Wootton Bassett Town on Saturday. The visitors started very well with some fluent passing, and could have gone ahead, but for a couple of good saves by the home goalkeeper Declan Lehmann.
The first goal was always going to be crucial, and into the wind, it was Waters who got it. On 36 minutes, Josh Dillon used his strength to win the ball in midfield, and fed the excellent Paul Burrows, who placed his shot into the far corner to give the away side the lead.
Soon after Matt Jones in goal saved well at the feet of Bassett’s left midfielder Alfie Presley. Other than that, the defence held firm, with Adam Mills and Finn Evered particularly impressive.
With the wind in Waters’ favour, they withheld the inevitable home surge at the start of the second half, albeit thanks to another great Jones save, the post, and the strong defensive display of the back four. At the other end, Martin Peters (welcome back!) played in a delightful reverse ball to Burrows on 58 minutes, who slotted in his, and Waters’ second.
Bassett were not finished though, and pulled one back to cause Waters a few flutters on 72 minutes through TJ Bohane. However, Burrows, Evered and Adam McNamara all went close with further chances for the visitors. The game was put beyond doubt on 84 minutes after McNamara waltzed past Bassett’s defence out wide, and hit a pinpoint ball into the path of Peters, who calmly slotted home from close range.
Manager Ceri Jones was delighted with the win, “A top effort and performance, and delighted to come away with all the spoils. We wish RWB the best for the season.”
