VWFC v Burnham
20/10/2020 Virginia Water 2-2 Burnham
Hellenic Premier Division
Report by Ceri Jones
Marc Lansdowne (number 5) heads Waters in front
Honours were even in a great local derby at Stag Meadow between Virginia Water and Burnham.
Burnham certainly dominated the first half, with their terrific strikers Manny Williams and Gavin James prominent and causing the home side problems.
Despite this, Waters, who were forced into a last minute reshuffle at centre back, held firm with Finn Kelly-Lewis and Marc Lansdowne excellent at the heart of the defence.
Somewhat against the run of play, the home side took the lead on 31 minutes, when Lansdowne rose highest and headed home from a corner.
There were chances at both ends, with Burnham hitting the bar, even if most attempts were from distance.
The equaliser came in the fourth minute of first half injury time, when a bizarre penalty was awarded for an alleged push in the box, which James converted.
Waters were the better side after the break, and went ahead after a strong run by Paul Burrows, led to him crossing for Casey Bocarro to tap home on 66 minutes. Undaunted, the visitors fought back. Waters were caught in possession, and a through ball put Gavin James in for his second and Burnham’s equaliser in the 70th minute.
Both sides pushed for a winner, with Waters coming the closer; Kelly-Lewis hitting the bar, Enow ‘Smiles’ Ojong forcing a great save form their keeper when through one on one, and they also failed to capitalise on a late counter attack.
All in all the result was a fair one, and Waters wish Burnham the best for the season.
