VWFC vs Merrow
27/08/2016 Virginia Water 1 - 0 Merrow
Surrey Elite League
Report by Ceri Jones
It was a great response from the Virginia Water players today after the disappointment of last week! A much needed, and deserved 3 points, where Waters were the best team, and in fairness, sportingly acknowledged by the players of Merrow.
Waters started at a high tempo, and maintained this for most of the game. Equally pleasing was the clean sheet, with four 19 year olds in the back five, against a strong team who Waters knew would be a good test.
In the early exchanges Tim Rivers went close a couple times, on one occasion rounding their keeper, who managed to stay on the pitch after handling outside his area! Martin Peters and Rob Osgood were also in one the act, but despite all the dominance, the home side could not find the breakthrough in a tough first half, with the wind at their backs.
When the goal eventually came, no more than was deserved, it was Rivers (MoM), whose excellent control took him clear of their defence to smash home. As hard as Waters tried to find the killer second goal, they were frustrated by the away keeper and also missed chances – Peters, Steve Williams, and Osgood all going close when a goal looked inevitable.
At the other end, Waters stayed strong and solid, with Joe McBride, Finn Evered, Adam Mills and Andy Ingram having terrific matches. When called upon, Matt Jones made his customary top few saves, but to be fair, most of the action was in Merrow’s half of the glorious Windsor pitch.
Waters held firm for their first league win, in relative comfort, and now hope this gives them the momentum they need to push on.
Well done lads!
