VWFC vs AFC Spelthorne
20/08/2016 Virginia Water 0 - 1 AFC Spelthorne Sports
Surrey Elite League
Report by Ceri Jones
A very disappointing, lethargic display and report, when playing the first league match at the most impressive and welcoming Windsor FC.
Maybe this fact will raise the performances of visiting teams, but sadly this time Waters were found wanting in most areas.
In a match of very few chances to either side, with a gale force wind, the only goal came controversially in the 90th minute, when Waters paused at the back for what seemed a clear offside, only to be overruled by the referee.
This aside, Waters created very little in the way of clear chances, and missed, believe it or not, their NINTH successive penalty in the process, that was initially won by the trickery of debutant George Butler.
Apologies to all over the shortness of the report, but Waters will need to up their game and urgency ahead of next weekend’s matches against Merrow and Yateley (on Bank Holiday Monday).
The lads at the back did defend well enough, and had it not been for a couple of good point blank saves by Matt Jones, the home side could have lost by more.
At the other end, Waters lacked invention, did not get in behind Spelthorne, and seemed reluctant to shoot when opportunities arose - with only some near headers, deflected shots and ‘over the bar’ efforts to talk about.
Credit to the visitors who wanted this more, rather surprisingly given the occasion, but let’s hope this will be the last bad day at the office!
