Following some recent good performances, Virginia Water were brought back down to earth with a poor team effort, hardly worthy of a match report.
This is not to take anything away from Ardley United, who deserved their win and fought hard for everything.
The home side gifted the visitors the only goal on 20 minutes, when an under-hit header towards Matt Jones allowed striker Callum Harvey to nip in and chip over the advancing goalkeeper.
Both goalkeepers, in each half, hardly had any telling saves to make, although Ardley hit a post, and Waters had a header cleared off the line, hit the bar with another, and Lorenzo Di Felice almost turned in a Josh Hennah cross.
The strong wind made conditions very difficult and the game itself was far from a classic, and Waters will need to bounce back quickly from this ahead of the visit of Burnham on Tuesday night.
Manager Ceri Jones was rightly disappointed, but was pleased with both of his full backs, who led by example, but on the day were not backed up by the rest of the squad.
